I hate money.
It feels like the human race is held hostage by currency
I’m just going to say it straight up: I hate money.
I truly, deeply detest it. But before you roll your eyes or shake a stack of dollars, pounds, or euros in my face to test my resolve or ask “Precious, if I gave you all this cash, are you saying you would reject it?” Well, keep reading to find out.
We moved from Calgary to Toronto because my partner got a new role less than two months ago. And in that short window, right in the thick of the festive season, we navigated the chaos of transitional Airbnbs, hunted for a permanent home, and coughed up two months' rent just to secure the keys. We hauled our car across the country and have been slowly trying to settle and fall in love with the new city.
And if you live in Canada or are familiar with the system, then you know we’ve spent a lot of money within a very short period. Because of all this, we found ourselves glued to our sofa in the first few weeks, as “outside” was expensive. Lowkey still glued.
Aside from that, we have visions for how we want our lives to look in 5 years and plans to build businesses that will eventually free us from the corporate grind. We’ve been working without taking any break for years. However, as it turns out, buying that freedom or building that life we want comes at a cost. A ridiculous cost that leaves me wondering and asking if, when, or how we are going to achieve that.
And that right there is the part I hate!
It feels like the human race is held hostage by currency. More than half of the things you can think of right now involve or cost some cash. Even if you choose to sit at home and do nothing, you pay for the roof over your head, the clothes on your back, the internet connecting you to the world, and the couch you’re resting on. I could go on and on. Nearly everything you can think of involves money somehow.
There is a lot of dependency on money, and I wish life weren’t designed that way. I wish there were a better way out. Why were we born into a world where we have to be so reliant on a currency that is not easy to get? You work yourself to the bone morning and night, and then have to part with that money to get a comfortable life for yourself. Rinse and repeat (sometimes till you die).
Argh. I just hate it. I hate it so much.
Don’t ask me what a different world would look like. I have no idea, because I am sure trade by barter (as it operated in the times of our ancestors) would have pissed me off too if I didn’t have enough yams to trade for a new gadget I want. Regardless, the current system is just exhausting.
So yeah, to answer the question you never asked: If you dangled some dollars, pounds, and euros in my face and asked if I would take them.
Hell yeah! In a heartbeat. I would grab them with both hands. I hate that I need it, and I hate the dependency, but until the world changes, I’ll take the cash.
See you next time!
